Europe Is Sorting China’s Car Brands by Showroom, Not by Factory

Chinese automakers can build competitive vehicles at home. In France and across Europe, results now split on which models arrive first, how dealers get paid, and whether finance houses trust residual values. Volume is rising; profit still has to be earned locally.
NextFin News — Two Chery brands crossed into France on the same spring morning. They shared parentage, engineering and a pre-built web of sales and service points. They did not share a price ladder. Jaecoo opened in the affordable hybrid-SUV band, with long leases that read like a household budget line. Omoda opened near the top of fifty thousand euros. By early autumn, French registration files told an unsentimental story: one badge had become a real private-car business; the other still looked, in the data, like a network stocking demonstrators.
That gap is the European problem in miniature. Manufacturing strength got Chinese groups to the water’s edge. What happens after the ship docks depends on product sequencing, dealer economics and the quiet arithmetic of monthly payments—not on how many intelligent-driving slides fit on a Paris motor-show wall.
A market that already has winners
In the first nine months of 2026, Chinese passenger brands took a mid-single-digit share of France’s new-car register. Most of those plates sat on two names. MG, present for years, still leans on private buyers. BYD, scaling faster, carries more showroom and fleet-shaped volume while it thickens its retail grid. The residual Chinese share splinters among Chery-family badges, Leapmotor, XPeng and others still converting awareness into repeat orders.
Powertrain mix complicates any simple “China equals battery” narrative. Large fractions of French volume for MG, BYD and Jaecoo have been hybrid or plug-in hybrid. Pure-electric specialists sell into a thinner slice of demand until charging and habit catch up. Spain can look different in a single strong month for BYD private sales; that is evidence of national variation, not proof that one European playbook exists.
Why Jaecoo ran and Omoda waited
Chery’s French experiment controls for group capability and still produces divergence. Jaecoo occupied the price band ordinary families actually shop. Omoda’s cheaper metal arrived months later. Private registration ratios followed the metal that was on the floor, not the press release that announced two brands at once. As Omoda’s lineup fills out, the next quarters of data will show whether the lag was mostly calendar—or something stickier about brand position and residual confidence.
Lease quotes make the hierarchy visible without a configuration sheet. Same tenure, same mileage cap, sharply different monthly numbers. European car finance embeds a guess about what the car will be worth when the contract ends. Established marques have decades of auction tape. New Chinese nameplates do not. Caution in that guess shows up in the payment, even when the list price looks aggressive.
The dealer is the real customer
A household rarely buys a stranger’s car from a website alone. Someone pays for glass, staff, demonstrators, lifts and parts. If throughput stays low, those costs do not wait politely for brand equity to mature. Reporting around the Paris show already described better retail groups as partly spoken for by earlier Chinese entrants. Late brands inherit longer hunts for partners and for after-sales depth.
Responses differ by balance-sheet philosophy. BYD has multiplied Spanish points of sale from a handful to more than a hundred in a few years, with service sites trailing close behind—and registrations have climbed with the map. Chery splits the bet across two badges. Leapmotor folds into Stellantis’s existing European retail machine through a joint venture the incumbent controls, advertising drive-time coverage that independent greenfield networks cannot match quickly. Coverage still is not demand: French registrations for Leapmotor through September remained below Jaecoo’s, and group shipment tallies mix wholesale with retail. Who books the revenue under a 51–49 overseas structure is a contract question, not a press-wall question.
Gross margin is not the finish line
BYD’s first-half 2026 accounts made the strategic temptation explicit. Overseas revenue overtook domestic; foreign gross margin sat several points above the home figure; auto-related lines abroad looked richer still on a simple gross basis. Those totals blend continents and products. They sit above selling costs, local incentives, warranty, dealer support and a group research bill that does not care which region inspired it. A company can post stronger overseas gross profit and still deliver lower group net income. Europe only helps shareholders if contribution after channel cost clears the hurdle rate on the capital tied up in ships, stock and stores.
Pricing behavior is already maturing at the margin. Industry trackers have noted that Chinese brands in Europe still undercut legacy averages, yet the heaviest launch incentives have been cut back as some nameplates gain footing. Incumbents of a few years’ standing can afford to lean less on cash on the hood. Newer badges may not.
Trade policy and localization pull in another direction. EU duties on China-built battery cars push product mix, transfer prices and, for the largest volume plays, European assembly. Plants only reward the firm when utilization shows up. Building ahead of demand is a bet that registrations will follow concrete.
What the next scoreboard should show
Paris displayed the aspiration layer—premium cabins, fast energy fill, software features aimed at price territory long held by German luxury. The registration layer is still dominated by brands that solved ordinary European constraints: hybrid practicality, dense enough retail, finance a bank will clear, and a monthly number a family will accept.
Chery’s twin French scorecard is unfinished. Omoda’s lower-priced models are only now in the order book. Future prints will matter more than pavilion design. The wider Chinese cohort faces the same exam at different stages. MG and BYD already move metal in scale. Others still prove that a dealer can earn enough to reorder—and that a second owner, years out, will not destroy the residual assumption baked into today’s lease.
Factories decided whether Chinese cars could compete on product. Europe will decide, line by line, whether they can compete as businesses.
